Persistent reports circulated here today that French recognition of Israel was imminent. The reports gained some degree of credence by the publication in several newspapers of predictions that de facto recognition of the Jewish state would come in the early future.
A spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry would not confirm these reports, but admitted that the question of recognition had been discussed at a Cabinet meeting last Wednesday where, he said, it had been generally agreed that the Israeli Government in recent months had demonstrated it could exercise “adequate authority” within the territory allotted Israel by the United Nations.
