A Congressional investigation of the status of aliens in the United States who are unable to return home because of war conditions, including those who fall into the “enemy alien” category, was voted down yesterday by the House of Representatives.
The hearings which were proposed by Rep. Samuel Dickstein of New York, chairman of the House committee on immigration and naturalization, would have looked into the possibility of amending the naturalization laws so as to aid the thousands of loyal Jewish refugees from Axis nations who, at present, are subject to all the “enemy alien” restrictions. Rep. John Rankin of Mississippi, speaking against the proposal, stated that such an investigation would only duplicate the work of the Tolan committee, which in reporting to the House urged that special consideration be given loyal refugees who are nationals of enemy countries.
