Senator Thruston B. Morton, Kentucky Rep., said here tonight that an accord between the United States and the Soviet Union “could just possibly set the stage for direct negotiations between Israel and the Arab states.” He urged, however, that the United States “offer the kind of flexibility that would guarantee Israel the proper materiel and technological support in the face of mounting armaments being supplied her neighbors.” The Senator said that direct Arab-Israeli talks were essential to progress for a lasting peace in the Middle East.
Senator Morton spoke at a testimonial dinner of the American Jewish Committee marking the presentation of its broadcasting and advertising division’s 1968 Human Relations Award to John W. Burgard, vice president of the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp.
