Republicans and Democrats Ban Religious Bias in Election Campaign

Chairman Leonard W. Hall of the Republican National Committee and chairman Stephen A. Mitchell of the Democratic National Committee joined today to pledge “high standards of ethics and morality” in the forthcoming November election campaign and at the same time reiterated a fair play pledge urging a ban on racial and religious prejudice from campaigns.

Individual pledges will be distributed to the 1,047 candidates now campaigning for Congressional offices. It was stressed that final judgment will be up to the voters to enforce conformity with the standards of ethical practices asked by Mr. Hall and Mr. Mitchell.

Each of the national committee chairmen previously issued individual pledges that their parties would conduct bias-free campaigns. The pledges followed issuance of an appeal by six civic leaders of the Jewish, Protestant and Catholic faiths urging the parties and individual candidates to refrain from campaigning in a manner which would encourage religious or racial bias.
