Acting upon the requests of Jews interned in various camps and villages in Italy as “enemy aliens,” the Italian authorities have decided to improve housing conditions of the internees for the coming winter, it was reported here today.
The Jewish internees also complained that the rising cost of food in Italy makes it impossible for them to live on the daily food allowances allocated to them by the authorities. As the internees must secure their own food, the Italian authorities have decided to increase the allowances to the equivalent of 40 cents a day for each man, 20 cents for each women and 15 cents for each child. Jews held in forced residence in southern Italian villages will receive an additional $2,50 monthly as a rent allowance.
