Residents of Bad Nauheim, in Allied-occupied Germany, who participated in the looting of the city’s synagogue, have been compelled to contribute to the reconstruction of the house of worship, it was reported by the Allied- appointed mayor of Bad Nauheim, broadcasting over the Luxembourg radio.
Announcing that one of his first tasks had been to “reconvert the synagogue into a temple of God,” the mayor said that it would serve the spiritual needs of any Jews in Bad Nauheim, Frankfurt and Kassel. He stressed that the compulsory contributions and the decision to reconstruct the synagogue had been taken on his own initiative, without Allied orders, but added that “I realize that this is not enough to make good the wrongs done in the concentration camps and the mass murders, but we are obliged to help the dependents of those who perished during the Nazi horror.”
