Dr. Israel Goldstein, treasurer of the Jewish Agency, returned by plane to Israel after spending several weeks in the United States. In a statement issued prior to his departure, he warned that “the Jewish state will face its greatest crisis since the Arab invasion unless American Jewry responds to the United Jewish Appeal’s current drive for $250,000,000.”
Declaring that “the internal stability of the new state is at stake,” Dr. Goldstein said: “That stability depends upon the provision of homes and jobs for the 218,000 Jews who entered Israel during its first year of statehood and the 18,000 to 20,000 a month who are continuing to come in.”
