A restitution law in the American zone of Germany providing for the return of considerable amounts of heirless Jewish property is expected to be announced in the near future as the result of a conference which General ##cius D. Clay, American Military Governor of Germany, held here today with representatives of six Jewish organizations.
With but a few legal details remaining to be worked out, every hope now exists for the early promulgation of the law in the American zone. It will probably be announced in Berlin by General Clay sometime in the near future. He is expected to return to Germany the and of this week. No date has yet been set for making the law effective.
At this afternoon’s meeting it was decided to go ahead with the zonal law rather than make any further attempts to reach an agreement with the British which would have created a bi-zonal law.
Attending the meeting with Clay were Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-president of the Joint Distribution Committee; Leonard Bernstein, representing the American Jewish Conference; Dr. Ignacy Schwartzbart, of the World Jewish Congress; Maurice Book##ein, of the Jewish Agency; Marcus Cohen, of the American Jewish Committee; and Prof. ##rome Michael, of the Jewish Cultural Commission.
