The practice by many independent London day schools of maintaining restrictive quotas against Jewish pupils was attacked here today by Mrs. Joseph Grimond, wife of the leader of the Liberal Party. Referring to a Liberal Party Council resolution against such quotas, Mrs. Grimond criticized press charges that the Council was “more Jewish than the Jews.”
Deploring the fact that Jewish attendance at such schools was generally limited to 10 percent, Mrs. Grimond said the practice caused “considerable hardship and distress to their parents, and must inevitably lead to educational segregation for an important and talented minority of our population.”
The Daily Herald today editorially deplored a subtle form of anti-Semitism existing in British golf clubs. Discussing discrimination in Britain, the newspaper cited religious bias in golf clubs, declaring: “Here again there is no open bar. People would not tolerate that. But somehow, Jews just don’t get admitted as members.”
