A recent series of swastika daubings in West Berlin and other West German cities has yielded no arrests and been given scant mention in the German press.
The daubing of swastikas and other Nazi symbols or slogans is illegal in West Germany. But three incidents have occurred in the past two months in Berlin and the suburb of Wannsee where someone scrawled “Freedom for Germany! Out with the Jewish plague” on a public edifice. A swastika appeared on a Berlin monument and another in the Ploetzensee, the site of Nazi executions of resistance fighters during the war.
In Wuppertal, swastikas and Nazi slogans were scrawled on four churches and other buildings. Similar smearings were found on the city hall in Brunschweig and on public buildings in smaller towns.
