The State of Rhode Island today opened its celebration of the American Jewish Tercentenary with a Governor’s reception at the State House and a mass meeting at the Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium attended by nearly 2,000 members of the Jewish community. Principal feature of the mass meeting was the presentation of two rare volumes written by Roger Williams to the Rhode Island Historical Society as a gift of the Jewish community. Ralph E. Samuel, national chairman of the American Jewish Tercentenary Committee, was one of the speakers.
The reception was sponsored by Governor Dennis J. Roberts and featured an address by Dr. Henry M. Wriston, president of Brown University, who was the spokesman for a citizens’ committee named by the Governor to assist m the affair. The entire program was under the chairmanship of Mrs. Archibald Silverman.
