World Jewry increased its contributions to the United Israel Appeal by 8 and a half percent during the first six months of this year, as compared with the same period in 1964, it was announced here today by Dr. Israel Goldstein, chairman of Keren Hayesod, the financial arm of the World Zionist Organization for campaigns on behalf of Israel.
Dr. Goldstein announced at the same time that new goals for the United Israel Appeal have been decided upon by Keren Hayesod. The United States quota, he said, has been fixed at $39,000,000, compared with last year’s target of $36,000,000. The quota for the rest of the world, he stated, has been set at $16,000,000, as against the previous goal of $14,000,000.
The campaign in Israel, to open next month, will aim to raise 6,000,000 pounds ($2,000,000), he announced. Last year, Israel raised 4,000,000 pounds ($1,333,333) “which is considered a pretty good figure abroad,” he declared. However, he added, “we know that our potential here is much greater. Much remains to be done here in developing the spirit of voluntary public giving.”
Abroad, too, he said, the Keren Hayesod income would be much greater “if there were more participants in the campaign.” As examples, he cited Britain, where only 38,000 Jews contributed last year; France, where the contributors numbered only 11,000; and Canada, with a total of 30,000 contributors.
