Our generation may see the development of a strong mystic movement in Judaism comp comparable to the mysticism which followed the expulsion of the Jews from Spain, Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver of Cleveland prophesied tonight, addressing a joint session on “Religion in Present Day Life” of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and the federations of temple brotherhoods and sisterhoods. Denouncing dictatorships, Rabbi Silver said that “the law of the Duce, the Fuehrer and the commissar ensues when the law of God disappears.” The Jews, he said, need religion today more than any other people.
Earlier in the day, Rabbi J.X. Cohen, chairman of the Commission on Economic Problems of the American Jewish Congress, attacked Jewish employers who discriminate against Jews in employment as giving “a grievous exhibition of Jewish self-hate.” Jacob Billikopf of Philadelphia criticized the impression that refugees displace native Americans in employment, saying that for the most part they created their own employment.
Albert F. Mecklenburger, Chicago attorney and former second vice-president, was tonight elected president of the National Federation of Temple Brotherhoods, succeeding Samuel B. Finkel of New York. Yesterday, Alfred M. Cohen, Cincinnati attorney and former president of B’nai B’rith was elected president of the council of the union.
