Many schools using German as the language of instruction have been closed down in Latvia during this year. The reason is the growth of National Socialist sentiment among the Germans in Latvia, resulting in the withdrawal of Jewish pupils.
As Jews provide the largest proportion of pupils in the German schools, many of these were compelled to close down. The Erik Germanus School, one of the oldest and largest German institutions in Latvia, has been closed this week on this account.
