A gathering of 200 paid tribute here Sunday to 82 American volunteers killed in action during Israel’s war for independence in 1948. Memorial services, held at the graveside of Col. David M. Marcus, the West Point graduate who fought for Israel’s independence, were sponsored by the American Veterans of Israel. Jewish war veterans of Livingston, N.J. and New-burgh, N.Y. served as an honor guard. The gathering included Mrs. Emma Marcus, widow of Col. Marcus and Rabbi Jerald Bobrow, of Monroe, N.Y., himself a 1948 volunteer, who recalled the dedication and sacrifice of those who enlisted in Israel’s cause 22 years ago. Lt, Col. David Levin, assistant military attache at the Israel Embassy in Washington represented his government and conveyed its thanks for the American Jewish community’s contribution to the war for independence. Sam Alexander chanted the El Maleh, prayer for the dead, following the reading of names of the Americans killed in action.
