A situation reminiscent of the War days prevails on the principal roads and highways of the Maramuresh and South Bukowinan districts leading to Bessarabia as strong military detachments are arriving in connection with the anti-Semitic peasants’ movement, which is spreading from Bukowina to Bessarabia, and the march of the anti-Semitic youth organization, Iron Guard, the Hungarian Telegraphic Agency reports.
All railway bridges leading to Bessarabia, particularly those in and around Jassy and Radauti, are in control of troops in view of the attempts being made by the Iron Guard to invade Bessarabia. The nationalistic youth organization led by M. Codreanu, is chiefly composed of school boys and college students.
Similar stringent measures are being taken by the authorities, local and national, to control the tour of the country now being made by Danila and Nicolai Totu, anti-Semitic agitators. The refusal of local officials to grant permission to these two to stop off at various towns has partly quieted the alarmed Jewish population.
On the other hand the Jewish members of parliament are reported to be dissatisfied with the promises made to them last week by Dr. Alexander Vayda Voevod, Roumanian minister of the interior, and have consequently decided to request an immediate audience with King Carol. Deputy Michael Landau declared that the pogrom atmosphere in Bessarabia is similar to the situation in 1905 and 1913 when that part of Roumania was Russian territory.
