Robert J. Aumann, a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, received his Nobel Prize in economics. Aumann, an expert on game theory and conflict resolution, was honored at the annual ceremony in Stockholm on Saturday along with co-winner Professor Thomas Schelling from the University of Maryland. Thirty-six members of Aumann’s family attended the ceremony. In his Nobel Prize lecture, delivered Dec. 8, Aumann said that in order to further the cause of peace, one must first understand the nature of war. The emphasis, he said, should shift from trying to resolve specific conflicts to the study of war in general. “Wars and other conflicts are among the main sources of human misery,” Aumann said, and they have been with us “ever since the dawn of civilization. Nothing has been more constant in history than war.”
