Mayor Israel Rokach was transferred last night from the Latrun detention came to Criminal Investigation Division Headquarters in Jerusalem. Together with Hillel Teur, a Nathanya councillor who is accused of being a member of the jury which sentenced two British sergeants to hang, Rokach was questioned by C.I.D. officials until late into the night.
Meanwhile, Magistrate R. Stultz turned down a request that he conduct an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the abduction of 16-year-old Alexander Rubowitz, who was allegedly seized and murdered by Major Roy Farran. Stultz based his refusal on the grounds that Farran was already in custody on a “holding charge of murder” by the Army and, therefore, there was no need for another inquiry.
Eliahu Sandes, a member of the Irgun who is serving a seven-year military sentence imposed last year, was apprehended today after he had succeeded in escaping from the Central Jerusalem Prison disguised as a policeman.
The death of an eleven-year-old Jewish girl near Pardes Hanna on Friday night, as a result of indiscriminate shooting by British soldiers, was protested today by a Jewish Agency spokesman. The spokesman also demanded a statement by the Government as to who was responsible for the shootings in Tel Aviv and Rishon-le-Zion three weeks ago.
The Agency representative also asked the Government to explain why the Transjordan Frontier Force is in Palestine. Several months ago, the same question was asked by the Agency, but no reply was received.
