The role of scientists at the Weizmann Institute at Rehovoth, Israel, during the invasion of Palestine was outlined in detail by Dr. David Bergan, scientific director of the Institute, and Meyer We is gal, executive vice-president of the Institute, at a reception here this week-endfor Latin American delegates who came to the United States to attend last Saturday’s testimonial dinner to Israeli President Chaim Weizmann.

Pointing out that in the midst of the invasion Israel’s men of science devised new weapons, solved the problem of manufacturing sufficient high quality gunpowder and harnessed the latest techniques of science to help sink the largest units of the Egyptian fleet, Dr. Bergman declared that the problems of the approaching period of peace are “not less complicated and not less exacting.”

Weisgal, who revealed that he will shortly return to Israel for the 14th, and last, time to take up his duties as chairman of the executive council of the Institute asserted that “when peace comes to Israel it will be one of the main forces which will fortify the industry and agriculture of the Jews in Israel. Dr. Salomon Tocker, director of the Latin American department of the Institute, who tendered the reception, read many messages received from Latin American countries, and introduced some of the leaders of Latin American Jewish communities who together with some 50 delegates from 14 countries came to this country to honor Dr. Weizmann.
