A memorial to citizens of Rome of all creeds who were deported to Nazi Germany was unveiled here yesterday in a ceremony on the anniversary of the arrival at the Mauthausen concentration camp of the first transport of victims from Rome 16 years ago.
The memorial portrays symbolically the walls of the concentration camp. Pope John XXIII sent a message of solidarity to the ceremony.
