The work of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and General Hugh S. Johnson in administering the NRA, received a tribute today from the Independent Order of B’rith Sholom, one of the largest Jewish fraternal organizations, meeting at its twenty-ninth annual convention here.

A number of resolutions were passed, including one calling for continued support of the boycott against Nazi-manufactured goods “so long as Hitler remains in power.”

Cooperation with the American Jewish Congress was pledged, and the work of the Jewish National Fund in the upbuilding of the Jewish National Homeland was praised.

PRAISE HEBREW UNIVERSITY

The Hebrew University in Palestine was described as “the highest cultural achievement of the Jewish people.” The delegates committed the national organization to establish a number of fellowships in the Hebrew University “whereby young scientists of prominence may be enabled to continue their teaching and research.” Other fellowships will be established for exiled German Jewish professors.

Subordinate lodges will be urged in communications to raise funds for the establishment of these fellowships in their own names.

Continued active support and cooperation was promised the Zionist Organization of America in its work of rebuilding Palestine.

A resolution was adopted sounding a scathing attack on the Nazi repressive measures against the Jews in Germany. It said in part: “By continuing its oppressive policies of discrimination and cruel persecution against our Jewish brethren, liberals, Catholics and other minorities, it has forfeited its status in the family of civilized nations trading with each other in amity and friendship.

NAZISM MEANS WAR

“It is employing the advantages of its foreign trade to bolster up a machinery of war and bigoted propaganda which threatens to undermine the status of Jewry outside of Germany and to deliver a deadly blow to the principles of democracy in which the Government of the United States rests.

“Therefore we solmenly reaffirm our adherence to the boycott of all goods, articles and services made in Nazi Germany, and of ships and shipping under the Nazi control. We call upon all constituent lodges to select a member in each as anti-Nazi chairman to work with vigilance committees for strict enforcement.”

The NRA resolution pointed out that the National Recovery Act, “under the inspiring guidance of President Roosevelt, and the able administration of General Johnson, is one of the major forces in the conquest of the depression.

“Since Brith Sholom has for one of its principal purposes patriotic devotion to the advancement and glory of the United States, we endorse the principles and purposes of the National Recovery Act.”
