Emphasising the necessity “to repel the wave of degenerate barbarity which has temporarily engulfed so many countries,” President Roosevelt, in a message to the 27th Hadassah convention opening here tomorrow praised the Hadassah record of humanitarian endeavor and expressed the belief that “the women of Hadassah, in addition to their devoted service in the physical and social advancement of the Palestine community from Dan to Beersheba, can assist in many other vital ways to fortify the bulwarks of democracy in the worldwide struggle to defeat the cohorts of tyranny.”
The convention, at which 1,500 delegates from 46 states will participate, will be asked to approve a “war chest” of $1,250,000, of which $475,000 will be used for war emergency work. The remainder will be devoted to carrying on the normal Hadassah activities in Palestine consisting of health services, aid to soldiers’ families and vocational training.
The convention will also go on record in support of the policies of President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill, as well as define Zionist post-war hopes. For the first time in the history of the organization, this convention will put forth an “American Affairs” program providing for participation by its membership in defense activities in the United States.
