The metropolitan area, which contains the largest single group of Jewish population in the United States and perhaps throughout the world, witnessed a maximum attendance of Jews in the Reform, Orthodox and Conservative synagogues and temples during the Rosh Hashanah services Saturday and Sunday. All available houses of worship were filled to capacity. The number was augmented by the large attendance at the temporary congregations formed for the High Holiday season, which held their services in halls, theatres and stores, disregarding the warnings of several permanent organizations and steps taken by the authorities to prevent what was termed exploitation of the religious sentiment.
A variety of topics, including every aspect of Jewish thought was treated in the sermons. The signing of he Kellogg Peace Treaty, the issue of religious intolerance in connection with the present presidential campaign, the rebuilding of Palestine as the Jewish national home, Jewish education, the changing conditions in American Jewish life in accordance with the adjustment tendencies, the broad tendencies of mankind at the present time were prominent features, treated by the rabbis each in accordance with the view held by the group he belongs to.
Another expression of Christian goodwill toward the Jews, in addition to the message of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, was the sermon delivered by Dean Howard C. Robbins at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on Sunday, extending the good wishes of the congregation to the Jewish population on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah. Christianity owes a debt to the Jews, he declared.
TO HONOR YOUNG JUDEA PRESIDENT ON RETURN
Nathan Straus has accepted the honorary chairmanship of the committee tendering a testimonial dinner to Dr. Israel Goldstein of New York, president of Young Judaea, according to an announcement issued by Samuel J. Borowsky, executive chairman of Young Judaea. The dinner will be held on Sunday, October 14 at the Hotel Astor, New York City.
A committee is now being formed under the chairmanship of I. D. Morrison of New York.
On his return from an extended stay in Palestine this week, Dr. Goldstein issued a message to Young Judaeans, in which he emphasized the opportunities for Jewish education in this country.
