The sum of 10,000,000 lei will be appropriated by the Roumanian government for Jewish religious purposes in the coming year, according to figures made public today. At the same time it was announced that for Moslem religious purposes the government will assign 12,500,000 lei. In view of the fact that the Jewish population of the country is ten times as great as the Moslem population these appropriations have elicited considerable surprise.
The Curierul Israelite, commenting on these figures, says the old proverb had it that the “Turk pays” but this should be changed now to the “Jew pays.”
