Signs that the Roumanian government is becoming more active in checking the spread of the anti-Semitic movement throughout the country are seen in the growing number of arrests of anti-Semitic agitators reported from the provinces. Among those arrested is C. Skreuk, who was detained by the police in Telepeni, Bukowina, when he was caught distributing leaflets to the peasants calling on them to burn Jewish houses and to plunder Jewish shops.
M. Zamra, a friend of George Beza who shot assistant minister of the interior, Dr. Constantin Angelescu, was also arrested today. Zamra is a lawyer. Zelea Codreanu, leader of the anti-Semitic youth organization, the Iron Guard, was brought from Jassy to Bucharest to explain to the state’s attorney his connection with the anti-Semitic posters which have been placarded all over Bucharest under his signature.
Together with Codreanu came the general inspector of the Roumanian secret police in Jassy. He was called here by the ministry of the interior and the ministry of justice to report about the anti-Semitic activities in his region.
In the meantime the all-Roumanian Congress of Jewish Students which was supposed to open this week in Czernowitz has been prohibited by the Czernowitz authorities. The Jewish Students’ Association intends to file a protest with the government.
