The Roumanian Legation at Washington, D. C., just received the following statement from the Roumanian Government in connection with the latest news published in the American press with regard to the student riots in Roumania:
“Mr. Landau. Jewish Member of Parliament, requested the Government not to authorize the Christian Students’ Congress at Craiova, inasmuch as that meeting was intended to be turned into an anti-Semitic manifestation. Minister Contachescu replied that neither the Government nor the University authorities have any constitutional powers to prevent such meetings, but that all steps had been taken to maintain order in accord with the students’ organizations who pledged their sincere collaboration. The fact that the Congress was held in perfect order fully justifies the attitude of the Government.
“The incidents at Cluj and Timisoara have not been provoked by the stu-

dents’ organization. At Cluj, a number of students tried to enter the offices of the Magyar newspaper “Elenzek.” because this paper refused to deny certain injurious attacks made on the students in connection with the Craiova Congress, and several windows were broken. For similar reasons the offices of the Magyar newspaper. “Temesvary Hirlap,” at Timisoara, were attacked. Here, also, the students’organizations had nothing to do with the individual actions of some students.
“The Temple of the ‘Grand Orient’ Free Masons had not been devastated, as it has been exaggerated in reports published in the foreign press. A few students, excited by misleading information, forced their entrance into the Temple during a sitting and attempted to seize the archives in the belief that the Masons were plotting against the safety of the State. The Government, through the voice of Mr. Joanitzescu. Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of the Interior, has declared that the university authorities have taken severe measures and have expelled the students found guilty of excesses.
“All the students’ organizations, through their authorized representatives, have informed the Minister of Interior that they do not associate themselves with those who discredit their country and the Roumanian culture.”
