Roumanian Jews Hope for Improved Status in King Carol’s Accession to Throne

The willingness of the Jews of Roumania to support King Carol and the hope that his assumption of power will mean stability for the entire country is expressed in a declaration read today in Parliament on behalf of the Jewish Parliamentary Club, speaking in the name of the Jewish population of Roumania which hails the new regime as inaugurating a reign that will put an end to recent anti-Semitic disturbances.

Just before Dr. Maniu was replaced by Premier Mironescu, for one day, he received a special correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency who has arrived here to look into the reports of anti-Semitic troubles. Dr. Maniu told the correspondent that he is satisfied with the new political situation and expressed the belief that the change would prove beneficial to all interests of Roumania.

With the new political developments overshadowing the Jewish question the anti-Semitic agitation of Professor Cuza has ceased to be a factor and the Jewish deputies in Parliament feel that a sectional attitude is impossible. The Roumanian Jews are prepared to emphasize their loyalty to the state in consonance with Jewish aspirations and to place their hopes in the stability of the new regime. This is the spirit of the Jewish Parliamentary Club’s declaration, the full text of which follows:

“The Jewish Parliamentary Club and the entire Jewish population of the country associates itself with affection with the dynasty and solemnly lays at the feet of the throne inextinguishable confidence in the capacities of the successor of the Roumanian kings. The Jewish population perceives in the act consummated today a guarantee of the development of the country and the peaceful progress of all its nationalities.

“Rising above every day questions and considering only the supreme interests of the country, we emphasize that the Jewish population desires with all its heart that today’s act signify the beginning of a peaceful life of brotherhood and understanding for the commonwealth.

“Being foes of all disorders, which primarily hit the Jewish population, we are convinced that the new constitutional order will compel the respect of citizenship rights and the fundamental institutions of the land and will recognize all sons irrespective of nationality as equal in rights and duties. We believe implicitly in the high and notable sentiments of justice of King Carol and we say in the name of the Jewish population, ‘Long Live King Carol and Greater Roumania’.”

As foreign minister in the Maniu government M. Mironescu, who was premier for twenty-four hours until King Carol was placed on the throne, last year told Jacob Landau, managing director of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, who was visiting in Roumania, that he desires stabilization of the Jewish situation to prevent the molestation of the Jews in the railways and universities and that he would pursue a determined policy of suppression of anti-Jewish violence.
