The problems of Roumanian Jewry were discussed at the Conference of Jewish Communities in Old Roumania, at which Chief Rabbi Dr. Niemirover was chosen as the representative of the Jewish Communities in the Senate.
Dr. Niemirover said that he realized that he would have a hard fight in the Senate against those who attack the Jewish faith. “The Jews, however, never forget that they were Roumanian citizens,” he said. He will endeavor, he said, to introduce the spirit of peace and will represent all Jews without distinction.
A report on the Jewish schools declared, “the schools, although citadels of Roumanian culture, encounter difficulties.”
The Conference decided in regard to the question of the Jewish Communities, that individual communities should not ask for recognition as juridical persons, but should wait until a law is passed in Parliament regulating the position of the Jewish communities in the whole of the country.
Mr. Samuel Bettelheim, member of the American branch of the Agudath Israel and head of the press department of the Agudah Bureau, has resigned from his post and from the directorship of the preparations for the Agudah convention which was to be held in Philadelphia.
