M. Ciobanu, chief government procurator, today informed a representative of the Jewish population of Balti that Balti Jewry may rest assured regarding peace because he has taken the most energetic measures to preserve order and to enforce the law against disturbers. He also said that he had called the leaders of the Cuzists into conference and informed them that he was determined to maintain order at any cost. M. Ciobanu declared that he would imprison all rioters and agitators at the slightest sign of trouble.
M. Ciobanu’s assurances came shortly after Serge Dimitru, Liberal leader and former prefect of Balti, had charged that the situation in Balti and Soroca was disquieting because the dissatisfaction of the peasants was being exploited by anti-Semitic agitators.
