Roumania’s Official Press Continues Demand Jews Deny Reports of Excesses

An attempt to persuade Roumanian Jewish leaders to issue a denial of the reports concerning the anti-Jewish excesses in Roumania was made by “Le Progres”, the official organ of the Roumanian government here in the French language.

“Le Progres” states that “a feeling of loyalty ought to induce the Union of Roumanian Jews to issue a denial of the reports of anti-Jewish disturbances circulated abroad. The Union also ought to protest against any action on the part of international Jewish organizations against the interests of Roumania. If the Union continues to pursue its present policy, any reaction of the Roumanian political world will be justified as a means of national defense,” the paper declares.

Figures concerning the percentage of Jewish students in Roumanian universities, apparently calculated to destroy the impression that a numerus clausus is being practiced by the universities, were published today by the Ministry of Education. According to the statistics of the Ministry, which cover the 1926-27 semestre, the University of Bucharest had an enrollment of 25,391 students, of whom 2,637 are Jews; the University of Cluj (Clausenburg) with an enrollment of 2,491, numbers 180 Jewish students. Of the 1,161 students at the University of Czernowitz, 280 are Jews, the Ministry of Education asserts.
