William M. Rountree, formerly Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, was sworn in today as Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern, South Asian and African affairs. He succeeds George V. Allen who has become United States Ambassador to Greece.
James Lampton Berry, formerly special assistant to Deputy Under Secretary of State Loy Henderson, replaces Mr. Rountree as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State.
Mr. Rountree, 39, is a career diplomat. He entered Government service in 1935 and has held various posts in the Middle East. In 1946 he was appointed special assistant to the Director of Near Eastern, South Asian and African affairs in the Department of State. In 1955, he assumed duty as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern, South Asian and African affairs.
