George Rublee, Washington lawyer and a close friend of President Roosevelt, will be elected director of the permanent refugee bureau when the Intergovernmental Committee on Assistance to Refugees meets in London tomorrow, a reliable source here said today. He is to sail soon for London to undertake his job, the most important and difficult aspect of which is to negotiate with Germany for facilitation of emigration.
Mr. Rublee is a partner in the Washington law firm of Covington, Burling, Rublee, Acheson and Shorb. He was a friend of President Woodrow Wilson and served on the Federal Trade Commission, the Eight-Hour Commission and other government bodies during the Wilson administration.
James G. McDonald, chairman of President Roosevelt’s Advisory Committee on Political Refugees, returned on the Normandie yesterday from Evian, where he acted as an adviser to Myron C. Taylor, American delegate to the conference.
