Bessarabian Jews who have been deprived of their civic rights by recent Rumanian laws have been ordered to surrender their military papers to the authorities, it was learned here today. The measure has caused some surprise since Rumanian military law prescribes that anybody born on Rumanian soil must serve in the army.
Simultaneously, Rumanian labor chambers and chambers of commerce have begun to refuse labor permits and commercial licenses to those unable to produce proof of their inscription into the nationality lists. By this action, the existence of approximately 300,000 “stateless” persons in Rumania is seriously endangered.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Religions has received Chief Rabbi Alexander Safran and Dr. William Filderman, president of the Union of Jewish Communities, who demanded religious autonomy for Jews and equal rights with other religions. The Minister received the proposals favorably.
