A Rumanian folk dance troupe has suddenly cancelled an Israeli tour which was supposed to open here tonight, followed by an official gala premier tomorrow night. The telegram announcing the cancellation gave no reason for it and suggested no alternative date. Attempts to ascertain the motive have yielded no information and Israeli circles now believe that the Rumanians acted under political pressure, either from the Arab states or the Soviet bloc.
The Rumanian Ambassador, Jan Kovatz, whose efforts to improve Israeli-Rumanian relations have been endorsed in Bucharest and in Moscow, said this morning that the cancellation was due to technical reasons. But he did not amplify what these might have been. Twenty performances had been scheduled throughout Israel.
