A decree whose effect will be to deprive thousands of Jews of jobs was published today simultaneously with an editorial in the newspaper Porunca Vremii demanding expulsion from Rumania of all Jews of Bessarabian or North Bukovinian origin.
The decree, confirming a previous decision by the pro-Nazi Cabinet, specifies that all persons barred from membership in the totalitarian Party of the Nation are ineligible to hold public office, to direct industrial and commercial enterprises and to hold employment officially or in a private, professional capacity in any organization. Jews are barred from membership in the Party of the Nation.
The editorial in Porunca Vremii demanded also that Jews who had “Rumanized” their names be compelled to return them to their original form.
Earlier, Interior Minister Popescu received Dr. William Filderman, president of the Union of Rumanian Jews, assured him that order would be maintained and asked him to instruct the Jews to remain calm and to ignore “exaggerated rumors.” Popescu promised assistance to families of arrested and interned Jews.
