Minister of Justice Lucratiu Patrascanu was urged today by a Jewish delegation to speed the return of several hundred buildings belonging to Jewish organizations which was expropriated during the Antonescu regime.
The delegation, which included Jewish candidates for Parliament who are running on the government bloc’s ticket, pointed out that originally the buildings were to have been returned by April 1946, but an amendment to the restitution law extended the period to the end of the year.
The mass indictment of persons implicated in the Jassy massacre of 1941, when 25,000 Jews were killed, has been completed and awaits the signature of War Minister Constantinu Visilia Rascanu. It is learned authoritatively that 400 defendants have already been arrested and further sensational arrests are expected. The trial, which has aroused great interest here, is expected to open in December.
RUMANIA REFUSES TO WAIVE CUSTOM DUTIES ON JDC TRANSPORT OF SEWING MACHINES
Disregarding Allied recommendations, the Rumanian Ministry of Finance has refused to release from custom duty a transport of sewing machines sent by the Joint Distribution Committee for distribution among needy Jews here and to equip Jewish vocational schools, it was revealed today.
A representative of the J.D.C. today stated that the transport, which arrived here at the end of September, will be sent back to the United States. He greatly regretted this fact, emphasizing that the machines are urgently needed especially in the vocational schools.
