WHILE COMMERCE MINISTER VALERIUS POP WAS DEFENDING HIS POLICY OF PROMOTING “PURE-BLOODED” RUMANIANS’ WELFARE AT THE EXPENSE OF MINORITIES IN A SPEECH AT ORADEA, THE UNION OF RUMANIAN INDUSTRIALISTS TODAY ANNOUNCED IT WOULD SUPPORT THE POLICY AND CREATED AN EMPLOYMENT BUREAU THROUGH WHICH IT WOULD SUPPLY ITS MEMBERS WITH “ETHNICALLY” QUALIFIED PERSONNEL.
ADDRESSING THE ORADEA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, M. POP, WHO HAS “URGENTLY RECOMMENDED” THAT 50 TO 75 PERCENT OF ALL JOBS IN RUMANIAN ENTERPRISES BE OCCUPIED BY PURE RUMANIANS, DECLARED THE TIME WAS RIPE FOR CREATION OF A RUMANIAN MIDDLE CLASS THROUGH SUCH A POLICY.
M. POP DENIED THAT HE WAS AN ‘EXECUTIONER OF MINORITIES” AND PROFESSED NO DESIRE TO “INTERFERE WITH THE RIGHTS OF THOSE WHO ARE LOYAL AND FARSIGHTED.”
“BUT,” HE EMPHASIZED, “MINORITIES MUST UNDERSTAND CERTAIN HISTORICAL REALITIES.”
THE INDUSTRIALISTS’ ORGANIZATION, WHICH IS THE OFFICIAL BODY REPRESENTING ALL MANUFACTURERS IN RUMANIA, ANNOUNCED ADOPTION OF M. POP’S RECOMMENDATIONS, MADE IN A CIRCULAR DISTRIBUTED LAST MONTH WHICH WARNED OF HEAVY PENALTIES FOR NON-COMPLIANCE.
IN A STATEMENT APPROVING THE PRINCIPLE OF PROMOTING THE INTERESTS OF PURE RUMANIANS, THE UNION DECLARED:
“IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT RUMANIANS BE APPOINTED TO ALL VACANT PLACES CAUSED BY RESIGNATION, PENSIONING, DEATH, ETC., WHILE VACANCIES CREATED BY NATURAL DEVELOPMENT MUST ALSO BE OCCUPIED BY RUMANIANS. BEGINNING NOVEMBER 1, A SPECIAL BUREAU FOR EMPLOYMENT OF RUMANIAN PERSONNEL WILL BE OPENED BY THE UNION.”
THIS DECISION, IT WAS STATED HERE, RENDERS THE CHANCES OF JEWS OBTAINING EMPLOYMENT IN INDUSTRY MOST DIFFICULT.
