The Young Men’s Circles of the Union of Rumanian Jews held a celebration today in honor of Haham Moses Gaster, chief rabbi of the Spanish and Portuguese Community of England and a native of Rumania, whose eightieth birthday is being observed.
Among the speakers were Senator Jakob Niemirower, chief rabbi of Rumania, Rabbi Halevy, Zelter Sarateanu, Dr. I. Bacalu and Dr. M. Reitzel. A note of congratulation was sent to the octogenarian scholar and Zionist leader in London.
Dr. Gaster, one of the most famous Jewish scholars and orientologists, was forced by Government decree in 1875 to leave Rumania because of his vigorous protests against the Government’s policy on the Jews. He was later invited to return, but declined.
