Rumanian Jewish organizations today appealed, through the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, to medical circles in the U.S. for assistance in finding a cure for 600 persons suffering from a mysterious illness as a result of food eaten at the Vapnirca Camp in Transnistria, to which they were deported by the Antonescu regime. The victims are paralyzed in varying degrees and 43 are unable to walk.
The affliction, which has been named “latyrism,” is reported to have appeared first after the deportees were fed exclusively on lentils for a period of weeks.
