Constantin Bursan, a former member of the Rumanian parliament who was sent by the Rumanian authorities to Turkey to contact Jewish organizations for the purpose of negotiating the transportation of Jews from Rumania to Palestine, was arrested today in Bucharest shortly after his return from Turkey, the Nazi radio reported from Berlin. He is charged with having made contact with British and American representatives during his stay in Istanbul.
Diplomatic circles in Switzerland, who were aware of Bursan’s trip to Turkey, were under the impression that although he was in Istanbul ostensibly to negotiate with Jewish groups, his main reason for going there was to contact representatives of the United Nations and to discuss with them the post-war treatment of Rumania. The Nazi broadcast today discloses that while in Istanbul, Bursan was shadowed by German agents who reported to Berlin that he was engaged in negotiations with American and British diplomats. This would indicate that his arrest was ordered by Berlin.
