Rumanian officers and police officials who organized and carried out the deportation of 200,000 Jews from Bessarabia to Transnistria have been placed on trial here. Only 14,000 of the Jewish deportees survived.
Among those being tried is the former governor of Bessarabia, General Voiculescu, who is charged with direct responsibility for the deportation of Bessarabian Jews and for the murder of 25,000 of them in the Kishinev ghetto. The other defendants include Col. Meculascu, Inspector of the Military Police, and fifteen high officers.
