Serious anti-Semitic sentiments were voiced yesterday at a meeting of Europeans resident in Calcutta because of the repeated reports that Sir Herbert Samuel, a Jew, may be the next Viceroy of India, the Calcutta correspondent of the Observer cables. He points out that the semi-official rumors that Sir Herbert would succeed Lord Irwin had provided the anti-Semites with additional ammunition. Many of those who recognize Sir Herbert’s ability and are aware of his services to the Empire prefer the present conditions to the appointment of Sir Herbert, the Observer’s correspondent says.
The Sunday Times today said that it has learned that the new Viceroy would not be named until the conclusion of the Indian round table conference which King George will open on November 10. It will continue until the end of the year and perhaps longer. The Daily Herald, organ of the Labor Party, now intimates that Sir Herbert will not be Viceroy and suggests that the post will go to some member of the House of Lords. It was the Daily Herald which first reported that Sir Herbert was being considered.
