Donald Rumsfeld, President Reagan’s new special envoy to the Middle East, met with Premier Yitzhak Shamir and other top Israeli officials here tonight.
Rumsfeld flew in early today from Cairo where he had a two hour meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. He also visited Beirut before coming to Israel and is expected to go to Damascus to see President Hafez Assad when the Syrian leader recovers from an appendicitis operation.
Israeli sources said Rumsfeld’s initial meeting with Shamir was largely a “listening session” for the new American envoy who is a former Secretary of Defense. The Israeli leaders were expected to outline their positions and aspirations in Lebanon.
