The regions of south and southwestern Russian, an area with a population of not less than 25,000,000 people, are facing again the danger of a famine, according to reports which have reached here.
The population of these regions, fearing the approaching famine, has become panicky, and is spending every penny for storing up food. As a result of this the price of foodstuffs in the Ukraine increased enormously during the month of June. In some localities, the increase was as high as 200%. Because of this artificial increase in the buying of foodstuffs, all other trade has stopped, even though the farmers are now bringing very few products to the markets. This condition particularly affects the economic situation of the Jewish traders.
The threatened regions are considered to be the districts of Bachmut, Poltava and Ekaterinoslav.
