Russian Jewish leaders added their voices to a growing chorus of political and public figures condemning Latvia’s treatment of its large Russian-speaking population. “Fascism will always raise its head where and when the persecution of national minorities begins,” said a statement signed by Russian Chief Rabbi A dolf Shayevich and the leaders of Holocaust survivor and veterans groups. The officials said recent attacks on Jewish sites in Latvia have been the direct result of the Latvian government’s unwillingness to deal with intolerance directed at the country’s Russian minority.
