Responding to Defense Minister Moshe Dayan’s recent criticism of the Israeli Rabbinate for not resolving the mamzerim (illegitimate children) issue, the honorary president of the Religious Zionists of America (Mizrachi Hapoel Hamizrachi) questioned Dayan’s authority to call rabbis to task and criticize those who welcome American Zionists efforts on behalf of Israel except when it comes to religious issues. “When we want a say on religious matters and demand that religious questions be resolved according to halacha, Dr. Yissachar Dov Bergmann said, “we are told not to interfere in Israeli internal affairs.” Rabbi Bergmann’s remarks were made during a broadcast interview before the opening here last night of the RZA’s 62nd convention. Later, at the convention, he called for unity in the religious camp in Israel.
