REPROVES KIPNIS, LIEDER
“Americans should also bear in mind that certain artists like Frieda Leider, of the Metropolitan Opera Company and Alexander Kipnis, of the Chicago Opera Company, who is a naturalized American citizen, both of them accepted an invitation to sing at Bayreuth, despite the courageous action of many world famous artists who refused to have anything to do with Nazi Germany. Both these artists sing in American companies, where more than half the income comes from Jewish patrons. Neither of these artists even had the excuse of being in financial need. Other artists whom I know need the money badly refused the invitation.”
Mr. Hurok revealed that he had cancelled the contract of Mary Wigman, German dancer, but he refused to reveal the names of the others, saying that some of them were innocent and were being coerced by Nazi terror and that as soon as they escaped abroad, and he was sure that the money would not get to the Nazis, he would reinstate their contracts.
