Funeral services were held here today for the late Dr. S. Sapira, chief rabbi of Antwerp, who died at the age of 72. The Mayor of Antwerp and the Governor of the province embracing that city were among the prominent mourners at the services.
Born in Rumania, and the holder of a doctorate in philosophy and theology from the University of Berlin, Dr. Sapira has lived in Belgium since 1935, except for the war years, which he spent in Cuba. He was chief chaplain of the Province of Antwerp, and a professor at the Royal Lyceum. Among his scholarly achievements was the mastery of a total of 16 languages.
