S.Y. Agnon, the 78-year-old Nobel literature laureate, was cheered here yesterday for declaring at a Yeshiva University function that he was determined to return to Israel "even if I knew I would be greeted by all the cannon fire in the world."
More than 1,000 students, faculty members and officials of the university attended the event where the Hebrew writer received an honorary Doctor of Hebrew Letters degree. Dr. Samuel Belkin, Yeshiva University president, evoked a prolonged burst of applause when he urged the laureate to "convey our prayers to our brothers in Israel for peace."
