Earlier in the day Premier Flandin issued a striking appeal in behalf of the French government to the government of Germany, to respect the rights of national minorities in the Saar and thus avoid the migration of Saar inhabitants and their dispersion into other countries.
Simultaneously Premier Flandin addressed an appeal to the League of Nations, emphasizing it is the duty of the League to protect the population in the Saar against possible reprisals, especially the national minorities and those who did not vote for returning the territory to Germany.
“France herself will not close her frontiers to those fugitives who believe themselves threatened in the Saar,” the appeal states.
“We ardently wish that such circumstances should not occur. We also feel that we have the right to expect from the German government a similar exhibition of good will with regard to the rights of persons and with scrupulous respect of these rights.”
